the fewer people who pay attention to scott adams the better the world will be. the fact that for a while he was kind of a household name is an indictment on our society

he occasionally gets attention for saying bigoted things under the guise of common sense, plus he's basically trying to promote The Secret by another name, so he's locked in to a certain amount of continued celebrity despite the decline in popularity of his never-funny comic strip

isn't "the secret" already co-opting old ideas under a new name? i thought the whole thing with that dumb book/author was that not only were her ideas demonstrably stupid, but also just regurgitated new age horseshit that she somehow got credit for.

even 'dislike' is too strong a word.

i just hadn't heard the name in years and figured the rest of the world was equally unconcerned with whatever the fuck he might have been doing in that time.

Thats a lovely insult,.. but why?

Things I know and things I've learned,.. Hard core Rep's, Dem's & Indie voters dont decide elections, their combined totals dont amount to even half.. undecided Swing voters always cast the winning Potus vote.

Despite the current spectacle, Its going to be a Hilary/Jeb race.. Hilary wont win,.. that leaves the other guy. I predict Jeb, and I havent been wrong for along time..

But I sure HOPE i'm wrong! ..A lot of people hate being wrong about stuff,.. I actually hope and pray i'm Wrong, about many things

you haven't been wrong, in your claim, for four elections.

so you successfully picked two establishment candidates who were always strong contenders and two incumbents.

congratulations on guessing right four times on, like, 65% chances of being right. i guess.

this is actually largely untrue. swing voters matter but are a much smaller percentage of the population than people tend to think. the only real battle for swing votes is for new voters who haven't really found an ideological/party identification yet. people swing from one party to another occasionally but it's more rare than you'd think. for example, a moderate republican who dislikes scott walker isn't voting for hillary, they're just not voting.

the same goes for independent voters- there's tons of evidence from political scientists who study voting behavior that somewhere around 90% of registered independents vote exclusively for one party despite not being registered with one.

the issue is getting apathetic/occasional voters to actually show up. most of those voters aren't swing voters and vote consistently with one party, but they're also more likely to sit an election out. this is especially important with democrats because the democratic party has a larger base, which means it's also much harder to get consistent democratic turnout because those voters are less homogeneous in terms of ideology and issue positions than republicans are. the reason obama started off iffy in 2012 wasn't because so many people were defecting to romney, but because a lot of the left-of-liberal section of the democratic base had been disappointed by his first term and there was a lot of speculation that they just wouldn't vote in protest. this is also hillary's biggest challenge, not fighting for swing voters. bush won in 2004 by ignoring swing voters and mostly appealing to conservatives, meanwhile the democratic base was ambivalent about kerry and a lot of people just stayed home.

this is why most of the big "swing counties" that decide presidential elections are mostly the suburban rings around big metropolitan areas. using ohio as an example, everyone knows that the rural counties in the south and on the PA border are going for republicans and that cincinatti, columbus, and cleveland are going for democrats. but the suburbs aren't as easily predictable because you still have some ideological heterogeneity in those counties because young, recent college grads (or college kids who are still registered to vote at home) who tend to lean democrat are intermingling with older conservative voters.

a lot of this would be moot if voter turnout wasn't embarrassingly low, but when you have such small sections of the population deciding elections, then swing voters basically become irrelevant.

it's hilarious that they are making a huge deal about trump signing this pledge to the republican party. now i really want him to run third party and basically bitch slap the face of the repubs along the way.
