so are you vegan, or just eat vegan items from time to time?

I am on week 2 of no meat. trying to cut out dairy as well, but that is a bitch to do. I dig cheese and sour cream to much. vegetarian for me, for now.

any suggestion on which 'meat-less' brand is the best?

I have had morningstar for years, but the sodium in that is nuts. I have tried beyond meat and a couple of other smaller brands(and have enjoyed it). had a solid vegan italian sausage over the weekend. even could grill it without it going to shit.

i don't eat vegan meat all that often, mainly because of things like sodium and it can get expensive. (that pack of 6 taquitos cost $6). i do like the chicken (sorry, chik'n) patties from quorn quite a bit

yeah all the chik'n version from all brands have been pretty solid. I am trying to limit the fake meat option to a couple of times a week. I have been making my own burgers from beans, lentils, beets etc.

wife made a damn tasty vegetarian lasagna last night. the elimination of meat has not really been difficult, but trying to think of some new spins on other dishes has taken some thought. they are a ton of resources with recipes, but so far many of them have just tasted bland.

I’ve also been trying to cut out animal products the last couple months (I don’t call myself vegan because I’m not 100% strict about it) and I’ve just been eating the fake meats and cheeses thus far. Which is not only bad with the sodium, but you also end up using a ton of vegetable oil (and yeah they’re also he’ll of expensive). So I’m working on a better way to do it. Unfortunately I’ve never learned decent eating habits so I’m not big on eating straight vegetables. I wonder if it’s possible to change your palete at my age?

i remember you've talked about that before and from what i've read, taste for fresh vegetables is hard to develop if you weren't raised on them (assuming that's what you're talking about). i'd probably feel the same if my dad wasn't serving steamed broccoli with practically every meal growing up. but i'd imagine your palate could change through consistent effort

on another note, a few days ago i fell on a slick spot on the sidewalk and bruised my tailbone. it hurt pretty bad the day of, but now it feels perfectly fine. all i did was ice it for about 15 minutes. i haven't even needed to use any of the ibuprofen i bought. is that weird?

not to derail the thread, but it is never too late. I have generally good health and my lab results have improved since my late 20's where I ate garbage all the time. the only reason I am giving up meat is to keep myself in continued good standing. I am half native american, so genetics are going to fuck with me anyway.

as for food, I do eat a bunch of fresh veggies. it was just part of how we ate growing up, but then it was always with fried chicken, or pot roast, etc. so far I am feeling a boost in energy level. as for oil when I need to use it...I go with avocado or coconut oil. the vegan 'butter' has been pretty good if you just need a little something to use in a skillet.

I will never claim vegan status. I am going to have cheese from time to time. I also will at some point have meat here and there. I just want to save that for more special meals or events. I have found a few low sodium fake meat products that taste great. the issue is the shelf life is so short, you have to eat them within a couple of days.

I am sure brody has some good tips.

weird. it double posted.

also, taste buds die out every few years right? so I mean just because you did not care for the taste before, that can be different now. I dunno.

As a kid, I used to dislike eating most veggies unless they were slathered in gobs of butter. In the past 6 years or so I've been able to just eat veggies steamed with some salt at the least and be perfectly satisfied. But roasted veggies are the GOAT.
