The first season was confusing at first, but once you're a few episodes in, you just naturally start getting used to the characters and figuring stuff out. I think the book was just as confusing at first, and I watched the show months earlier. With not really understanding it all and with the time that had passed, I wasn't really matching stuff up in my head very well (mainly I got Varys and Littlefinger mixed up)

After watching the show, reading the book and watching the show right after I was though the relevant chapters, I decided in the future I'll watch the show first, and then read the book and then rewatch episodes as I get to that point. This way, I get the visuals for everything from watching the show, then when I read the book, the visuals will already be in my head. I figure if I read the book first, I'll make up my own visions for everything and then when I see the show, it'll get all mixed up and not feel right. I figure it'd probably even leave me feeling a little disappointed like, "well that wasn't as cool as I imagined it."

So glad this show is back on TV. I'm just about finished with the first book, then I plan on picking up the 2nd and reading ahead of the series. I really enjoy watching it on HBO, but I just can't wait that long to find out what is going on.

I'll read ahead and watch the show as it catches up. So far, from what I've read of the first book they did an excellent job potraying season one true to the book so going forward I won't need to worry about how it translates, I just want to see what happens

The introduction of the new characters might have been kind of confusing, but I was expecting there to be new characters. It was only confusing in a "Oh, I'm looking forward to seeing where this is going" kind of way, not in an angry "Who are these people? What's going on?" way.

I wouldn't expect to understand everything straightaway. Would the book instantly go into detail and explain who they are? Because that might work in a book, but it's more interesting in a TV series to just introduce them briefly and let the intrigue build.

2nd episode seems to be available on certain pirating sites already.

It's listed as a web rip though, I guess some region of HBO put it online.

The review I read said they had a pre-airing review version of the first 4 episodes, so it wouldn't surprise me that someone has leaked something. I'll wait until it airs before illegally downloading it.

 no

But seriously, the gag had finished, nobody was going to do that anymore. It's fair enough if you didn't find it funny but there's no need to be such an ass.

pretty good episode (especially the tyrion stuff), but they never even implied in the slightest that stannis banged milesandre in the books, right? i mean, i thought the whole thing with stannis was that he was so honorable about stuff like that and was nothing like his brother robert? i feel like they screwed up his character with that move

but anyway, sorry about the book talk. that just bugged me and i wanted to see if i was way off base here. is that true to the books and i just missed it somehow?

Yeah, liked it for the most part. I think I preferred the scenes with Arya though. Seemed a little odd without seeing Joffrey, Sansa, Robb, Cat, or Bran (especially since Winterfell is shown in the opening).

no there's definitely the implication. isn't it implied that's the reason he's sort of wasting away, since he's giving so much of his energy to her/the lord of light through their fucking? i may just be remembering it wrong.

also i thought tonight's crossed over into the show's soap-y side too much for its own good but it was still enjoyable.

i agree that his morals start to wither the more he listens to her, but i never got the impression that they fucked. and i certainly don't remember some "i can give you a son" shit

yeah it was never anything that explicit and i don't remember anything about a son either. but i could have sworn there was some description of him where he was getting gaunter with the implication being he was up all night with her in his chambers. again, i speed read the books so some parts are hazy to me but i have a pretty clear memory of at least something along those lines.

also grrm giving his thumbs-up to everything on the show makes me think there was probably at least a blink-and-you'll-miss-it reference to it in the books.

I know I've not read the books, but I think you're missing the bigger picture here guys. Milesandre is hot and you get to see her naked. Who cares about possible deviations from the book.

oh also i wanted to mention i really liked the woman they cast as asha, thought she was spot-on. gonna be weird calling her by a different name, though, since i've already forgotten it and thought of her as asha in every scene she's in.

They call her Yara. And fuck that, I'm going to continue to call her Asha.

it seemed like a weird choice to me. i get that it's close to osha but it's not like they would ever be mentioned in the same context and it's looking less and less likely their stories will ever really intertwine.

Well, that, and rearrange the letters of Yara and you get Arya (a character audiences are far more likely to think of than Osha) so what exactly are they helping here?

i'm all for staying true to the books and all, but i find it hard to get worked up over them changing the name of a relatively minor character

i'm not exactly worked up about it. i get their reasoning, but i still think it's sort of weird/pointless and it's gonna take a second to adjust to people calling her yara when i've spent the past year with her in my head as asha.
