i haven't listened to fang or flipper in a while, but i was really into both when i was in high school. really i haven't listened to a lot of punk rock in recent years. i may have to go dust off my ss decontrol and gang green cd's soon.

this is why i usually avoid punk threads like the plague

i mean, shit can't get any worse after a LEFTOVER CRACK post but jesus christ.

i'm not saying ITS NOT PUNK because that is the dumbest shit and so many threads seem to devolve into that. i'm just saying most of what has been posted, in all honesty, sounds like shit.

mr t experience are so good.

punk on, punkers...ignore my old man ramblings and enjoy the music you enjoy. i just happen to enjoy glossy production and straightforward lyrics about drinking way too much to cope with being a neurotic, anxious fuck-up. you know, shit i can relate to.

Right, because there are no punk rock songs about alcohol or neurosis.

I think it what Nathan is saying is he prefers songs that actually have a little bit of production and not just the shittiest recordings on the face of the planet. I know it isn't the bands faults since that is all they could afford, but doesn't mean people have to enjoy it.

heaven forfend that low fidelity should ever be an aesthetic choice

Too many bands that use low fidelity as a choice cross the border of being shitty for the sake of it and just being shitty band.

so what

but anyway yes right im glad you agree nathan

the middlebrow normative notion that 'production' means clarity is such guff

imagine how boring a person would have to be to think that

"good production" is a pejorative and has caused me to turn off many a recording in disgust over the years.

but back to the (non)music.

chalk circle was an all-girl hardcore band from the early DC scene. no, not "that" DC scene. the other, weirder one that harbored miscreants like united mutation and nuclear crayons. mississippi records just reissued their discography, which is not to be missed.

Some of their songs are terrible especially in their latest output. But these dudes wrote some of the best love songs.

not trolling here, but i think the queers' 90's output and a lot of screeching weasel aged HORRIBLY. i just can't deal with the whoa-a-oh's and whiny vocals like i used to. when i listen to the riverdales, i skip all the ben songs.

Yeah I've met quite a few people who think that way. But I still love all of it. My Brain Hurts is probably in top 5 albums ever. While most Queers albums are too uneven I do think they released tons of songs that are phenomenal. I'm just a huge sucker for a good pop song. But both bands need to stop releasing new albums.

the queers are definitely a track-band and not an album-band. the only exception is maybe love songs for the retarded and even then there are some tracks i would cut.

that being said, i don't like their pre-lookout! albums at all and the cleaned up asian man records reissues are even better.

edit: fuck yeah, smoking popes! i saw them on their reunion tour last summer and they still rule. haven't listened to the new album yet.

are you crazy? that's their best material! "this place sucks", "kicked out of the webelos", "i don't wanna work", "we'd have a riot doing heroin", etc etc are all classics. total angry samoans worship.

once i saw them play at the rat in boston back in '95 and wimpy came up and did a surprise mini-set of the old songs. second best old guy in punk right behind chris barrows from the pink lincolns.

best material? nah. Those songs are "okay", but in the 90's is when the Queers learned how to craft a good pop-punk song. I think I have the same feelings about early Queers that I do about early Screeching Weasel.

we could sit here and argue this point but the truth is that the 80's queers and the 90's queers bare so little resemblance to one another that they really should've just changed the name.

as for early weasel, that first album wasn't very good but by "boogadaboogadaboogada" they started to find their pop sensibility and hadn't yet lost their rawness. holds up remarkably well. my favorite albums of theirs are still "anthem" and "how to make enemies" though.

that first Screeching Weasel album is just bad. Yeah I like BoogadaX3 although there are a couple songs I hate on that album, but I don't really listen to it all that often. When I want to get my Weasel fix I usually just toss on my Brain Hurts, Anthem or How to Make Enemies.

"kill the musicians" holds up really well, too, even though it wasn't technically an album. that was actually my first exposure to SW back in the mid-90's. man, this conversation is really taking me back to 9th/10th grade. speaking of early high school, what about BLATZ?

Wow Blatz haven't heard that name in a while. Pretty great band! Anyone else still jam Isocracy or Filth?
