Iím a sports journalist/commentator/host for a radio network here in NZ.

not much planned for time off, going from Auckland where I live to Christchurch to my parents place and planning just not to do much. Havenít had a good break in a few years and this has been a particularly long one from a work perspective. Pretty much got forced to take the leave as I have so much but itís worked out well. Hoping to go to Europe at some point next year though.

I have never hiked anything remotely close to that morbo. did the altitude start messing with you a lot? some of my more daring friends have mentioned hallucinations on some more daring climbs.

We did an 8 day route up the Lemosho trail, which starts on the west side of the mountain and takes you around the southern edge at altitude. You can do it much shorter, but the extra time allows you to acclimate more. At 8 days, the summit rate is somewhere between 85% to 90%. At 6 days, I've heard it's closer to 65%.

It's all just hiking, no mountaineering skills required. Just a lot of walking, each day was usually 5-8 hours of hiking, except summit night. Summit night we started at 11:30PM, hiked 8 hours up, 4 hours down... had a lunch break, then hiked 5 more hours down for our final night on the mountain. That sucked

I've never done anything remotely close to this before... I've never even done an overnight hiking trip before and I think the longest "camping" I'd done was probably 3 days. Some friends just got the idea in their head that we were gonna do it... so we did.

I didn't experience any symptoms of altitude sickness... which can range from diarrhea, extreme headaches, lack of appetite, inability to sleep, feeling "intoxicated", etc. Everyone with our group made it up, but after about 15 minutes at the summit taking in the view, taking pics, etc... some people were starting to not feel so great and we all headed down.

I did see people who had to be held up by their guides being taken down near the summit, or people who were tripping and falling because they were probably having some symptoms. We also saw multiple people over the course of the hike being taken down on stretchers due to more serious injuries. Really made it set in that we were dealing with a pretty serious mountain, not just some afternoon hike...
