maybe you could read "first season was great, the rest was ehh" as a cop out but it's true

season 3 has an epic fight (dan vs. the captain i believe) and more awesome mr. wu moments. also a lesbian scene or two near the end.

a must-watch.

actually anything mr. wu & al swearengen is gold.

Loved..ADORED season 1. Couldn't get past the second or third episode of Season 2. So, I am in the same boat as @kevin.

counting freaks & geeks as a drama, my top 5 drama list is:

1. the sopranos
2. mad men
3. freaks & geeks
4. breaking bad
5. deadwood

that's elite company and it deserves to be there … it's that good. fuck the HATERS

i really don't understand the idea that it went to shit after the first season. i couldn't disagree more.

if anything, deadwood confirmed my existing belief that brad dourif is one of the most under-appreciated geniuses of our time. i know everyone has seen one flew over, blue velvet, mississippi burning, and the lord of the rings series, but he really shines in wise blood and ragtime. brilliant actor.

sheeeit. they have the complete series in the school library, and i was planning on watching it after i finished my wire rewatch, but kidney stones is one of the few things i cannot handle, along with onscreen castration or eye gouging. how graphic is that shit?

finished season 1 tonight. hopefully all this talk of a huge drop off is hyperbole because i absolutely loved what i've seen so far. everything with farnum being made mayor is gold. ian mcshane rightfully gets a lot of credit but brad dourif is just as good.

so far my favorite exchange of the series is indeed between wu and al:

"cocksucker!"
"well at least i taught you that word"

i respect everyone here who has argued that there is a drop off, but i just think it's a new direction that obviously divided the fan base. it worked for me. i actually like season two the most.

so i'm only to episode 3 of season 2 but i'm not seeing the massive tone shift yet other than maybe it's a little more scattered. i don't see why people gave up on it by episode 3 as it still seems like it's settling in. really the only story i'm not liking is joanie. and, as always, i think anna gunn is a shitty actress but i was prepared for that.

the kidney stone thing wasn't as bad as i was expecting. don't get me wrong i still winced and the sound effects were unbearable

Deadwood is my 2nd favorite show of all time, only behind "The Wire". Theres so much shit going on each episode, you really have to watch it twice, just to see what you didnt see the 1st time.

A truely great show.

joanie's story arc improves. kim dickens is great. she's one of the many reasons i feel bad about having not watched the last two seasons of treme.

anna gunn is terrible in this. i don't know how vince gilligan could have watched her reel from deadwood and been, apparently, impressed.

al swearengen is one of the main reasons i love season two. he is at his most quotable in the latter part of this season.

going to re-watch this series asap

Season 2 is right up there with The Wire seasons 3 and 4 as the best thing ever. Rewatch now!

one episode from finishing season 2 right now. i don't get why so many people hated it. joannie's story definitely picks up and gets great once it stops being joanie v. cy. i can see disliking having al so sidelined but it was really obvious from the get go why they were doing that so it's worth it. plus, more richardson! and i don't know if i've ever felt more glee during an episode than i did during nutall's bike ride, especially with al cheering him on.

maybe it's because i'm a politics nerd but i'm loving the mechanics of how the town deals with being absorbed into the united states and how this big picture thing is all done by men with selfish aims. on a related note, i love the way you enter the series with an impression of who al is, but by this point you realize the real "monster" is cy and that al is too intelligent to truly be the sociopath that you think he's going to be.

i was spoiled on the big plot development with william due to olyphant's nerdist episode. but it's funny reading the av club reviews where vanderworf talks about how amazing the foreshadowing towards that moment is all season when olyphant says that like 2 episodes before that one, milch decided last minute to kill the kid because he was tired of dealing with his mother who apparently was really impeding filming of the season by being really demanding. either way, that whole moment was just fucking fantastic and beautifully done. just the way it sets every character's physical proximity to the event is masterful.

and man, cole, you're not kidding about anna gunn. the moment during the funeral where she runs into the house is just awful on her part. i get that women in that time were taught to be stiff and whatever but that acting is just awful.

finished the last episode of season 2. amazing episode. reminded me a lot of mad men, not much of a plot but just watched the characters live for a day. loved the show of the music stopping with jane off screen yelling "WE AIN'T DONE FUCKING DANCIN!"

i've also decided my favorite thing on tv ever is probably any time al proudly refers to himself as swidgen when talking to mr. wu.
