homer getting to the plant before meltdown is a top 3 moment for me.

milhouse sending nelson the love letter is like a top 10 or 15.

and the rest of king-size homer and date with density are wall-to-wall excellent.

the show just feels somehow much more believable and real from seasons 6 to 8, to me (mostly in season 7). the characters act for their motives, not for the jokes. the humor feels less tacked-on than in 4 and 5, where the jokes happen incedentally, not as a product of the plot. LETS, marge vs the monorail, cape feare and deep space homer are goddamn brilliant, but are much less naturalistic and more closely related to family guy than the episodes leading up to and during oakley & weinstein's days, which are closer too... nothing else really. mike judge on drugs maybe.

i definitely like season 7 more than a few of the earlier ones. jafar's defense of it a few months back was pretty great

i always feel like home-sweet-home-diddly-dum-doodley is pretty much the best episode and peak moment of the series. especially for anyone who grew up in a religious environment.

it's just perfect

I still agree with David Mirkin's assertions on the commentaries that the funniest jokes are the free-standing ones that have nothing to do with the plot. Some of the most memorable gags are totally non-sequitur ones that have no effect on the plot. IRS Burger, Krusty lighting a cigarette with Action Comics #1, Spock beaming out at the end of Marge vs. the Monorail, Barney working for the "I Didn't Do It Boy" hotline, the horrible shitty edit of the Radioactive Man movie... haha fuck I'm cracking up thinking of all those.

Cut in syndication, sadly.

From Radioactive Man, I was really desperate to find the scene with the "Spirograph guy" about a week or so ago (if only to help explain my weird Facebook status to people), but couldn't find it. Such an awesome bit.

My favourite moments of the show are probably when Homer gets the brief moments of brilliance.

every now and then i'll become obsessed with a new show and think it's my favourite or whatever, but there's very little in this world that's brought me more joy than the simpsons over the years.

see, that episode illustrates my divide with everyone else regarding season 7 in a nutshell. i just don't get why it's so beloved. the story line is grating and formulaic, the jokes are mostly awful (when pigs fly, seriously?), there's an awkwardly forced guest star, etc etc. honestly, if that episode aired in season 15 i'd barely notice the difference

seasons 6 and 7 are tied with me

6 is considerably more consistent but 7 has steamed hams

My friend has you don't win friends with salad tattooed on her arm. So I'll laugh every time I see it. But Lisa the Vegetarian is average at best.

Season 2 is the best season

Lisa the Vegetarian really isn't typical of season 7, stylistically (that isn't a knock against either the episode or season 7, I love both); in fact, I believe it was technically an extra Mirkin episode and Oakley/Weinstein had nothing to do with it. Theoretically, you would need a different episode to illustrate what makes season 7 great/terrible/mediocre in your opinion.
