Default Weezer fans only

Quote:
New Weezer LP Due in '05; Cuomo Posts Solo Tracks
"The Color Purple" to feature Oscar-caliber performances

Cory D. Byrom reports:
The day is drawing closer that anxious Weezer fans will finally bear witness to new material from the band. It's been more than two years since the group's last full-length, Maladroit, hit shelves in May 2002, and though the wait so far has been nothing compared to the five-year hiatus between Pinkerton and The Green Album, the group's ardent followers are, we hear, growing increasingly impatient.

So it should come as a relief that frontman Rivers Cuomo has told Billboard that they expect the record, produced by Rick Rubin and to be released on Rubin's American Recordings label, to be completed by the end of August, with a tentative release date of first-quarter 2005. The record could potentially hit sooner, but Cuomo has decided to delay the release until the end of his semester at Harvard this fall.

In the meantime, Rivers has utilized MySpace.com, a Friendster-like community website that allows members to upload pictures, music, and whatever (but at speeds much faster than the frustratingly slow Friendster), to circulate three solo acoustic songs. The tracks, which are free to stream but don't appear to be downloadable, appear alongside the sort of personal bio information you'd expect to see at a site like this, including the fact that Cuomo is a straight Gemini, "not a movie guy," and that his favorite TV shows as a child were Bob Ross' The Joy of Painting and The Guiding Light. The three tracks are all covers: "Tomorrow" from the musical Annie, John Denver's "Annie's Song", and Ann Poonkasem's "Invincible". Somewhere, Ann Coulter seethes with envy. Again.

Any thoughts? Do you think it will shape up to Pinkerton greatness?

Discuss.

Sorry, I didn't hear you... I was picturing Rivers as Daddy Warbucks.

My brain is bleeding.

Rivers graduated, like, 10 years ago. Since when is he back at Harvard?

I don't see Pinkerton happening again. I lost hope in Weezer when Rivers said he wasn't putting much effort into the lyrics on the green album. Then I bought the green album and wasn't impressed. I saw them in 2000 in a small club and they were still kick ass. But sometime after that, to me, they changed. I haven't realy cared for any of the music since Matt Sharp left.
It would be nice if it was Pinkertonish, but I don't think I will get my hopes up.... only in dreams.

Is Pinkerton considered a concept album? I always thought the whole Japanese references and the whole Pinkerton and Cho-Cho San stuff (references to M. Butterfly) counted. And several songs have references to Japanese chicks, which I assume was an ex.

Is this 'The Color Purple' the new album title, or is this just pfork whimsy?

Glad they're making progress on it, even tho they pushed the date back. Rivers at Harvard? Didn't hear of that until now. Hmm.

Also happy to see info on the new Ted Leo/Rx album on the same page. Is that the Pumpkins' Iha that owns the studio in which they recorded the new album? If so, rock +++.

high talk for someone desperately holding out hope for Mangum to come back to the recording studio (with a guitar rather than a cassette of field recordings)

the album demos they released last year? i heard they scrapped the majority of those. even heard that they were considering making this album mostly acoustic. unless they released some more, in which case I have been out of the loop...

Don't be silly.

Loved Blue
Made love to Pinkerton, several times, still do actually
Green was fair
Maladroit was fair

Still love Weezer, not expecting a Pinkerton though. I'll never 'expect' a Pinkerton. If it happens it happens.

Whatever. I'll be at Moe's.

yeah, the demos i have are the ones released last year. i've heard all the stuff your talking about, none of it is official (meaning from weezer.com) so im still holding out. about it being an acoustic album, im almost posotive this is just a myth, remember maladroit was rumered to be an acoustic album too? whenever something is posted on weezer.com about this ile belive it, but anywere else and its just talk.

So Weezer just surprised dropped a cover album. I can't stop listening to "Take On Me". Between this and the upcoming Black Album, I'm in full fan mode, lol.
