hockey!

the season is nearly upon us, for those of you here who follow the NHL.

lots of movement around the league over the summer, through unrestricted free agents, trades, and even restricted free agents ;)

and some of the biggest news of the offseason, that a lot of people don't even know about, are the new jerseys. every team in the league (along with the AHL) is adopting the reebok EDGE jersey, which is supposed to be a lighter, more aerodynamic material that resists water and sweat and all that jazz.

most teams have taken this as an opportunity to redesign their jerseys, or make minor tweaks, and here's the results so far...

boston: modified logo, home, away, new shoulder patch
carolina: home, away (they are NHL 08 shots, but they're confirmed)
columbus: home, away, both
detroit: home, away (barely changed, although the C's and A's are now on the right instead of the left)
florida: home, away, front/back
los angeles: home, away
nashville: home, away, both
NY islanders: home, away, both
NY rangers: both (barely changed)
ottawa: home, away, both, new shoulder patch
san jose: new logo, jerseys coming
tampa bay: New logos, home, away, both
vancouver: home, away, both
washington: new logo, home, away, both, new shoulder patch

also, i'm starting a fantasy hockey league again this year. it's not exclusive to NHC members, but it's a yahoo league again.

free to play, but you HAVE to be committed for the whole year. none of that crap about not watching your team after october 10th.

if you're interested, send me a PM. i'll only accept those i know/trust to be interested.

let the talk for the 2007/08 season begin.

wallet inspector 08-30-2007 04:32 AM

when i first read that i thought you meant big news about the Devils.

Larson Something 08-30-2007 11:46 AM

New Sens logo kinda looks like Messier.

Oh, and nice to see Sean Avery keeping busy during the offseason: http://www.24dash.com/showbiz_slapdash/26789.htm

kevin 08-30-2007 12:29 PM

BLACKHAWKS WOOO

see you at the end of the year and maybe a couple random times throughout the year where i bitch about how much they suck

Spartan 08-30-2007 12:36 PM

most of those livery changes look pretty great, really.

kevin 08-30-2007 12:43 PM

yeah i like tampa bay and washington a lot

vancouver looks horrible though

erock 08-30-2007 04:46 PM

logos look cool. only reason i like hockey is pretty much for the logos. my favorite team is the wild, in large part because of the logo.

here in western NY, it's hard to ignore the fact that the sabres are going to suck.

Mike 08-30-2007 04:50 PM

i disagree... the sabres just lost a lot of scoring punch and leadership, yeah, but vanek and afineganov (sp?) are going to keep getting better, along with ryan miller, and the young core of the team will keep improving too. derek roy, paul gaustad, guys like that are just going to play a bigger role.

nothing stopping the sabres from finishing anywhere from 5th to 8th.

It's been floating around a couple months, but the Sabres/Pens outdoor game in Buffalo on Jan. 1 is now official. I'm sure it'll sell out, but I don't know if it'll lure enough American eyeballs away from bowl games to have quite the effect the league wants.

mitch mitchell 09-17-2007 09:52 PM

i like the idea. there's going to be only one (or is it two) bcs games that day. no longer college football's holiday, honestly

also, i will have fox sports pittsburgh now. i can actually watch the penspenspens :bang:

Things are looking up for the Flyers this year. I guess it's not possible for them to get worse. I'm genuinely excited for this season. I'm thinking about dropping the cash for the NHL Center Ice package through Comcast. I live in an out of market area. Anyone have any experience/suggestions about this?

RIP bill wirtz

however... the future of the blackhawks is looking up

armypunx54 09-26-2007 11:23 AM

see now i've been out of the country for the last few seasons, are the bruins still any good? even though they aren't my home team i still love to watch them play. i also look forward to the ny vs. ny matches and ny vs nj. those games are always so good, their rivalry is awesome! i'm hoping for some really good matches this year!

mitch mitchell 09-26-2007 05:06 PM

my wife is getting me pens/caps tix for the anniversary :bang:

NJ Pete 09-26-2007 06:59 PM

yeah, rip.

and are you serious about that? last i heard the franchise was in utter disrepair

el canadiano 09-26-2007 07:33 PM

Admit it guys: Toronto's new jersey's the best (by that, I mean least bad looking) and Vancouver's the worst.

Again, I see the Southeast doing bad again this year, and the Northeast division's declining in quality, but to be honest, that division is all Sens/Leafs this year.

IdRathaHavaBeer 09-26-2007 08:16 PM

all buffalo :bang: can't wait for jan 1

el canadiano 09-26-2007 08:54 PM

How could they cope without Drury or Brière? :bang:

IdRathaHavaBeer 09-26-2007 09:06 PM

briere is overrated, losing drury really sucked but they'll manage.

well, bill wirtz was a big part of driving that team into despair... moreso in the public eye and not allowing the team on local tv.

Andy 09-27-2007 02:34 AM

from the looks of things, the franchise will more than likely stay in the wirtz family, namely with bill's two sons. the only thing is that the two sons are more involved in the family's liquor distribution business. it's still too early to tell who will be in charge of the team in the future. http://www.dailyherald.com/story/?id=46239

the fact that wirtz' death didn't get top billing in local sports reports shows just how hard the NHL has fallen around here. there's a lot of lost love between the city and the blackhawks, and it's hard to tell if a new owner would be able to easily heal those wounds.

Larson Something 09-27-2007 11:12 PM

Turning around the post-Wirtz Blackhawks is clearly a bigger challenge than, say, turning the Leafs around after Harold Ballard died. For one thing, despite the Leafs being terrible pretty much throughout the 80s, there didn't seem to be much deterioration in their fan base. The 'Hawks need to win Chicago back.

I do hope they can get it together though. It's depressing seeing one of the Original Six sink so low.

BatofZion 09-28-2007 01:41 PM

Call me crazy...

[but I can't find what's different about Carolina's jerseys]

Mike 10-02-2007 01:48 PM

http://cdn.nhl.com/oilers/images/upl...au-captain.jpg

it really doesn't look right on anyone but #21

... who coincidentally will be wearing the C for the flyers now.

and carolina added a small white stripe around their shoulders.

el canadiano 10-06-2007 05:51 PM

Did any of you Canadians see that video of Burke trying to diss Lowe?

Mike 10-07-2007 05:06 AM

oh yes, we did

http://www.hockeynerds.com/article/00009/

el canadiano 10-07-2007 08:42 AM

Lowe's gonna fire back

Mike 10-07-2007 03:33 PM

no, he won't. him and macT have already made a few comments and he'd look like a douchebag, like burke, if he said something a week later.

they've already submitted complaints to the league about burke, because his comments not only deface another GM in the league, but deface the CBA which is a really bad PR move for the NHL.
